The Hotel du Vin group plan to open their first standalone Bistro this April on St John’s Street in Clerkenwell. Taking over the late Eastside Inn premises, Bistro Du Vin will boast a 500 bin wine cellar and a wine tasting table for exclusive tasting events as well as informal tastings conducted during meals. Fans of Michel Roux’s BBC2 series Service will be delighted to here that eighteen year old Danielle Meenagh will soon be taking up a position here as sommelier. A former hairdresser, Danielle was awarded the programme’s sommelier scholarship and she is currently honing her skills under the wing of master sommelier Ronan Sayburn at the original Hotel Du Vin in Winchester.
The Bistro will also feature an in-house butchery which will be visible from the shop window and a glass walled chef’s table which will be located between the butchery and the kitchen. Head chef John Woodward, who has worked at Hotel Du Vin since 2003 and more recently at Malmaison, plans to serve simple French classics such as steak tartare and confit of duck with an emphasis on using seasonal produce sourced within a 30-mile radius. Their meat will be sourced from local meat market Smithfields and their cheese will come from Eric Charriaux, the co-founder of La Cave a Fromage.
